Congratulations, Christine Otis!

In November, our gifted youth minister, Christine “Chris” Otis, will receive the Saint John Paul II Parish Leadership Award at the National Catholic Youth Ministry Conference in Long Beach, California. The honor recognizes those who follow Pope Saint John Paul II’s example of serving and supporting young people in their faith journey and encourages efforts that support and strengthen young people in their daily encounter with Jesus Christ. In his letter of recommendation to the award committee, Bishop Caggiano commented on the authentic relationships Chris creates, her vibrant faith, and spirit of missionary outreach. He wrote: “She is innovative in her approach and teaches the mighty to lift up the lowly in whatever setting that might be. Both Saint John Paul II and Chris Otis see the youth as more than just a demographic. They are beloved sons and daughters of our living God, who need to be accompanied now.”

Chris has led youth ministry here at Saint Aloysius for 15 years and has created a model for youth ministries across the country; a model that does not revolve around weekly meetings but focuses on the pillars of prayer, service and worship that facilitate frequent encounters with Christ and each other. As one of our teens put it: “Mrs. Otis helps us grow closer to God and brings us together as a group to make connections with others.”

I would add that Chris provides a way to meet every teen in this parish where they are. There is something for every teen to do any time during the week or weekend. She is a servant leader who is so attuned to the needs of our teens and is so aware of what it takes to form them to become the disciples they are meant to be. She does everything with joy and energy.

I am blessed with a gifted staff who work tirelessly to make Saint Aloysius a welcoming and beautiful place to encounter Christ and one another. We are happy to pause and acknowledge one of our own team members for being recognized far and wide beyond a grateful parish. Congratulations, Chris!
