In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus says this to Pilate:
“You say I am a king. For this I was born and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”
Jesus walked this earth to speak the truth about the one true God and teach the world a way of living in truth. His kingship is more about serving, and he died because he wouldn’t waver from the truth. So, if Christ is King, then we are subjects to truth and love. This is the stuff of which good living is made – now and in the life to come. Let us pray that all leaders will serve and live in truth. Long live Christ the King!
After we have celebrated Christ as King of the Universe, we will celebrate Thanksgiving. This day of family, food, friends, and football affords us an opportunity to give thanks for all blessings – great and small. If Christ is King of our hearts, we are always grateful because He was always grateful to God the Father for all He was given, especially the gift of you and me. God is always blessing us, and if we take the time each day to reflect on those blessings, we get perspective on our problems and realize that God is larger than every one of them. The greatest Saints began their days and all of their adventures by thanking God. One of my favorite Saints, Solanus Casey, recommended that we “thank God ahead of time.” He was entirely confident that God would always provide what we need, especially in difficult moments, so it makes sense to anticipate a good outcome and offer an earlier-than-usual thank-you. What an amazing discipline! As we move closer to the season of Advent and prepare for the greatest gift given to humankind, it makes sense to “give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love is everlasting!”
Happy Thanksgiving!
